Product Description

This first book in the Sage Adair historical mystery series depicts the U.S. economy as failing the ordinary citizen who is slipping in his battle for family survival.  The year is 1902. As a secret operative in the growing labor movement Sage’s pursuit of economic justice leads him into hobo jungles, lumber camps, seedy saloons and the elite’s drawing rooms. Joining him in his right are a parlor house madam, a local Chinese tong leader, a coal-miner’s daughter and an Afro-American maitre d’ who has more “class” than the people he serves. On the night Sage uncovers a potential timber fraud, he  learns that an innocent young man has been charged with murdering a brutal railroad guard. Faced with the choice between pursuing the personal or the political, Sage chooses the personal only to find himself mired in the political.
